Making Quality Dental Care More Affordable

Family smiling in the parkHaving dental insurance coverage can make it much easier to pay for the routine care that will help you and your loved ones enjoy complete, healthy smiles for life. When it comes to making the most out of your benefits from year to year, though, you may feel like you don’t know quite how to go about it -- but visiting a dentist who accepts your insurance can help a great deal. Keep reading to learn how we partner with patients to help ensure that they receive the most out of their insurance coverage!

How Dental Insurance Works

Healthy smile with handheld dental mirrorDental insurance is something you or your employer pay for each month in the form of a premium. This is the regular payment, usually ranging from $50 to $150, which you pay to receive discounts and coverage on necessary preventive, general, and restorative dentistry services.

Most dental insurance providers offer the following benefits:

  • 2 checkups and cleanings either fully covered or 80% paid each year
  • An annual set of x-rays free or heavily discounted
  • 50% to 80% coverage on procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges
  • Partial coverage on new orthodontic treatments

Dental insurance plans run on annual periods from January to December or from July to June. Most do not roll over from one year to the next. Our team can help you make strategic decisions to stretch your coverage. For example, some years it may make more sense to break complex procedures up over 2 coverage periods to reduce out-of-pocket costs.

How Dental Insurance Differs from Medical Coverage

Dental insurance has more of a focus on prevention than your medical coverage does. Rather than paying to fix problems after the fact, dental insurance incentivizes the preventive care that helps you avoid the need for tooth replacement or gum disease treatment altogether. That’s why it makes sense to take advantage of covered preventive services each year!

An in-network dentist is someone who has come to an agreement with the insurance provider to render specific services at an agreed-upon, reduced price to you. You may still be eligible for the same discounts when visiting an out-of-network dentist, but you will have to wait for a reimbursement to come after you have paid the full amount out of pocket.
